Question by Jet: Does motorcycle insurance cover your medical bills if you are in a crash?
I’m new to this whole insurance process. Do I have to buy health insurance or does the motorcycle insurance I have from GEICO cover my medical bills if I were in a crash?

It should, but there is a probably a personal injury deductible. I would find out if your health insurance will cover you, or cover the amount of deductible. 20 Years ago I was in a wreck, and my health ins paid my $ 10,000 personal injury deductible on my moto insurance. Yes, $ 10,000 deductible.

On a side note, I’ve had my car insured w/ Geico for years and I’ve always been able to get quick answers from them by just calling them up.

Good luck – Watch the idiots out there!

    of course it does.

If you bought it. Some states you have to buy “medical payments” or “personal injury” coverage, but it’s REALLY REALLY expensive for motorcycles, so most people don’t buy it if it’s not mandated by the state. Even in states where you can buy it, usually they max out the limit for bikes, at $ 10,000 or $ 25,000, which won’t go very far in a serious accident.

So you’re better off having health insurance, too.

Call Geico. Ask them if you have any medical payments or pip coverage on your bike, both for you the driver, AND for a passenger behind you. In some states, you can get it for the passenger, but not the driver, so you want to know EXACTLY what you have.

You have to haved “medical payments” coverage. Some companies do not offer it on motorcycles.

Of course if the accident is the other guy’s fault, the other guy’s insurance will pay for your medical bills. You only have to worry if the accident is your fault, then you need Medical Payments coverage on your insurance or get health insurance.

Rules vary by state. You might want to post your state. Their website says Geico does offer medical payments coverages in most states, but not all.

You should have health insurance anyway.

  6. Because I Said So says:

most likely your bike policy only covers medical payments to others, if you hit someone and they made a claim against your policy. in the US you must retain health insurance in case of an accident or illness because to pay out of pocket would cost tens or hundreds of thousands for a car accident.
